Girl Time
I pull my old sedan up in front of the GPSâs final destination and double-check the text with Tallyâs address. They match. The dilapidated mansion Tally lives in comes as a shock. I always pictured her in a large apartment like what I used to live in or maybe a small house tucked into the residential part of town.
Instead, I find myself parked in the cracked driveway of a narrow three story, house with small balconies on the second and third level that overlook the single car width street. Yellowed grass covers the small, open patches on either side of the driveway, and a cobblestone walkway leads to a sagging porch.
Someone tried to give the old thing a facelift by painting it a light tan, but their efforts go to waste as it peels in places to reveal the black beneath. At random intervals, lights flicker in the upper windows, like the circuits don't quite connect right.
Adding to it the twisted maze of alleys it took to reach the house, and it makes for one unwelcoming residence.
I push my car door open, careful not to knock against the black sedan that sits on the left side of the driveway, closer to the porch. I recognize it as the one the guys drive when they bring Tally to work. It looks too nice in front of this house. Out of place with its polished hubcaps and sparkling windows that show a well-cared for leather interior. If they can afford a nice car, why not a nicer place to live? Somewhere that looks less haunted.
Hugging my elbows, I eye the overhang for signs it's ready to come crashing down as I creep up onto the porch. When it appears I'm out of imminent danger, I glance to the front door and freeze.
The ugliest lionâs head knocker I've ever seen stares back at me, red jeweled eyes flickering despite the deep shadows of the porch. Sharp fangs curl around the metal ring, the lips lifted in a snarl that dares me to come closer.
Maybe I should just text Tally that I'm here...
Before I can retreat, the door flies open, and Tally fills the entrance, pink hair vibrating with excitement. "Adie! I'm so happy you called!"
A surprised grunt escapes me as the baku demon throws her arms around me and gives me a tight hug. Her unique scent of clay tickles at my nose and makes me want to sneeze.
Over her head, I spot a polished marble foyer, with a curved staircase that leads up to a second floor walkway. A crystal chandelier throws rainbows of colors around the room and makes it impossible to see the framed artwork on the walls from the porch.
Tally releases me and steps back, her hands clasped in front of her chest. "I've never had a girlâs day before. This will be so much fun!"
"Well, we don't have a lot of time before we need to be at the bakery..." Flustered, I tug on the braid of white hair that hangs over my shoulder.
